Why EA Manager is its own stream

Managing a team of EAs is a different job.

The individual EA assessment tests one EA against one principal, and it is the right tool when you are hiring a single desk. Once you run a team of EAs, or are scaling up to one, the question shifts. It is no longer just "can this EA do the job"; it becomes, how will this EA operate inside a team? Will they hold the standards the team already runs? Contribute to the shared inbox without stepping on other EAs' toes? Flag capacity rather than silently fold? Correct a peer's work without you having to do it?

The EA Manager Edition is the tool that answers those questions. You commission the assessment and an EA sits it: either a candidate you are considering hiring, or an incumbent you want to benchmark. The scenarios are set in a multi-EA context, and the six-capability report gives you an expert-reviewed read on how this EA will land on your team before the decision, not after.

What the assessment surfaces

Six signals we read from the candidate.

Every scenario is set in a multi-EA team context. The report gives you a read, across six dimensions, of how this EA will actually operate inside your team.

  1. 01
    Handoffs

    Delegation

Does the EA pass tasks up, down, and across with enough context that nothing falls between desks, and can they receive delegated work without it boomeranging back to you?

  2. 02
    Process

    Process discipline

Will the EA respect the handoffs, status updates, and escalation paths your team already runs, or default to their own workflow and leave the team patching gaps?

  3. 03
    Shared inbox

    Shared-inbox hygiene

The canonical multi-EA stress test. When the shared inbox is hot with three executives each treating their thread as the priority, does the EA keep it on the rails, or add to the noise?

  4. 04
    Feedback

    Standards & correction

How does the EA handle feedback: taking it from you, giving it to a peer, catching a mistake before it lands? It tells you whether this EA lifts the team or relies on it.

  5. 05
    Managing up

    Upward translation

Can the EA represent work upward cleanly: flagging capacity, pushing back on an unreasonable ask, earning trust with the exec team, without making you the bottleneck for every exchange?

  6. 06
    Under load

    Team resilience

When an EA is signed off, a principal is travelling, and a board pack is due, does this EA hold steady, or does the pressure land back on you and the most senior hands?

The two levels

Matched to the EA you're assessing.

The level you commission depends on the seniority of the EA being assessed: not the size of your business.

"Candidate will land well in a multi-EA setting. Confident process discipline and strong shared-inbox instincts: will contribute to rather than drain team capacity. Standards module showed a tendency to redo rather than flag, which the commissioning EA Manager should coach on in the first 90 days. Recommend hire."

Commonly asked

Before you commission.

It is a tool for anyone running multiple EAs: most often an EA Manager, sometimes a founder, COO, or chief of staff with several EAs reporting in. You commission the assessment. An individual EA sits it: either a candidate you're considering hiring into your team, or an incumbent you want to benchmark. You get back a expert-reviewed report that tells you how that EA will operate inside your team.

An individual EA. The decision-maker: the person running multiple EAs: is the one commissioning the assessment, but the candidate sitting the 70- or 85-minute session is the EA they want to hire, benchmark, or develop. The report comes back to the commissioner.

The individual EA assessment (Stream 1) tests one EA against one principal: the right tool when you're hiring a single desk. The EA Manager Edition tests the same EA, but inside scenarios set in a multi-EA team context: shared inbox, handoffs, peer-level standards, upward translation through a team lead. Same rigour. Different shape, matched to the context the EA will actually be working in.

The EA Manager Edition was built specifically because Lily Shippen has spent more than a decade placing EA Managers and Heads of EA into roles running multi-EA teams, while Emily Partridge has sat in the seat itself: as a former EA Team Manager responsible for 60 EAs globally. The rubric reflects both sides of that experience, and every report is expert-reviewed and signed off before release.

The stream is in build. The scenario brief, module content, and scoring rubric are being drafted and stress-tested through early pilots. Email us to join the early list and you'll be notified the moment commissioning opens: with first-access pricing for early commissioners.
